I’ve been looking for some good running shoes for a couple years now ever since New Balance discontinued my favorite shoes. My last pair of trail shoes were a pair of Salomons I got on sale, but they’re clunky and weigh a ton. I also have a pair of road shoes but they’re half a size too small (my feet got bigger or fatter, or both) and cause pain if I do any longer runs. Recently I’ve been searching far and wide for a pair of light-weight, comfortable running shoes, but my local Road Runner Sports store either doesn’t carry the lighter (less than 8 oz.) shoes or they don’t have my size. I got a pair of Newtons finally, but I found that the extra cushioning on the fore-foot was really uncomfortable– I would love their shoes if they didn’t have the weird cushioning on the front!
After much research, I finally decided to give the Vibram Five Fingers a shot. I bought a pair of the Women’s Sprint and had to return the 1st pair because of sizing. Make sure you check Vibram’s sizing chart on their website before you get your first pair, or else go to a shoe store with knowledgeable salespeople. These Vibrams are still relatively new– I couldn’t find salespeople who knew what size to recommend or whether toe socks should be worn for running.
In any case, I finally got the right size the 2nd time around and took them for a run. I had run less than 2 miles before I felt chafing near the inside arches of both feet where the strap across the top starts. Also, there was pinching and chafing on my big toes where the seams are. On my right foot, there was pinching on my pinky toe as well, although no chafing. After my super-short run, I took the VFF Sprints off and saw that I had developed blisters in both my inner arches.
I’m thinking that I’ll give them another shot since this is only the 2nd time I wore them. I’m also probably going to try the men’s version since I’ve heard they’re wider; hopefully they won’t pinch and chafe as much. I also got a pair of the Injinji toe socks that I can wear to reduce chafing. I’m hoping that the 3rd time will be better. Until then though, these shoes are 2 stars for me.

I just got mine yesterday. I bought them direct from Vibram (MUCH CHEAPER) not through Amazon. So far I really like them. I haven’t taken a run yet, but I’ve been wearing them around work and I really like feeling like I’m touching the ground with every step. There is an immediate and natural adjustment your brain/foot makes walking in these. I realized my first two steps were almost painful in the heel because I’m used to walking in a shoe with a heel. By the third step my body adjusted. I have large feet for a girl and I am in the largest size they make…I probably could use a half size bigger, but so far no complaints. Getting them on has been a little bit of a challenge, but I assume it will get easier every time. I’ve realized I have no toe control…and I’m hoping walking “barefoot” more often will change that. (Which will make putting the shoes on easier) I will liken it to putting on Isotoner gloves. They aren’t stretchy and you have to work each finger in…but once it’s on it “fits like a glove.”

A friend of mine walked up to me the other day and had a pair of these on. I asked her what they were and she talked for 2 hours about the benefits of barefoot running. My fiancee and I had just started working out again (new years resolution) and I was struggling with shin splints. My friend told me to try these.
The Pros:
Shin Splints GONE hooray!
Super Comfortable (once you figure out how to put them on)
The Cons:
If you are not used to running on the balls of your feet, START SLOW! I ran 1 mile (see above about just starting to work out again) and couldn’t walk for the next 2 days. My calves were not accustomed to this kind of work out.
Over all:
I love these shoes and accomplished my dream of getting rid of shin splints, so they work. I have only been wearing them for a few weeks now, but I have a feeling that these will encourage me to run more and with out pain.

I have been wearing these for several months now. I’ve been doing some running in them recently and have found it is much easier to lift my feet and correct my form. I love the freedom that they give me. The adjusted quickly to my feet and are really comfortable, I have never gotten a single blister from them. So far I’ve only taken them for 3 mile runs or hikes but plan to train for a half marathon in them.
Recently we went on vacation to Mexico and I brought them along to a nature park where we were doing rappelling into caves, and snorkeling inside the caves. You can’t wear fins in the caves as they can cause damage. My Vibrams were perfect, I wore them all day long. They stayed on in the water, dried quickly too. We hiked around in the jungle and they were fine.
My husband has crooked toes and he’s had some comfort issues with his, my toes are pretty straight. So this could be a consideration. I suspect if your second toe is longer then your big toe that you may have issues also.

Go off on a limb–barefoot! These shoes will let you do it. They’re built to love your feet as much as you do. I wish they’d been avaialable many years before now and I’m glad I discovered them in 2009!
